I like to paint portraits from life but can do them from reference, preferring to take my own, but will consider references supplied . I retain the right to refuse to paint from references which I consider not suitable
The below commission was painted in pastels from an overblown reference. Also the baby’s expression was miserable. This meant I had to work hard digitally to get the reference up to what I considered an acceptable standard before commencing the portrait.
